Silverwing Kenneth Oppel

"Marina: Are there any other Silverwings who have bands?"

Silverwing is the first novel in the Silverwing Series by Kenneth Oppel. The story is focused mainly on Shade, a young bat who is repeatedly taunted for being the runt of the Silverwing colony. His mother, Ariel, is very protective of Shade as he lost his father before he was born.

One day when Shade is being teased by Chinook, the newborn with the most attention, Shade decides to challenge Chinook to see the sun. Now, this was forbidden as the birds and the bats had been at war a long time. When the owls had won, they had made a rule that no bat would ever be allowed to look at the sun and if they got caught doing it, they would be killed. Chinook returned before the sun came up, but Shade waits until he see's a bit of the sun. An owl see's Shade doing this and trys to kill him but Ariel rescues him in time.

I would recommend this book to anyone above the age of 10 as it is a medium-sized book. I would give this book a 9/10.

  1. What book in the series is this?? I remember when I was 10 I was obsessed with Firewing but I got over it and forgot about the series :) Just wondering how many more were published after that. Is this better than the first, or have they gotten worse?

    1. Silverwing belongs to the The Silverwing book series. In total there are 4 books in the whole series including Silverwing,Sunwing, Firewing and Darkwing. Actually, Silverwing is the first book in the series and i personally think they've gotten better. :) Hope this helped!
