Ingenue by Jillian Larkin is the second novel in her flappers series. In the second installment, Lorraine Dyer becomes the manager of a top of the class underground watering hole in a plan to take revenge on her best friend no more - Gloria Carmondy, and her African American boyfriend - Jerome Johnson. Meanwhile poor, desperate and starving, Gloria and Jerome are barely surviving through theft as they look for jobs in the entertainment industry, while hiding their scandalous love for each other.
Clara Knowles Gloria Carmondy's cousin and her boyfriend Marcus Eastman move to New York disgustingly in love, but Clara is becoming secretive as she goes about life fearing that her old flapper life style - the one she sworn off of would catch up to her.
I generally enjoy well written historical fiction, for example Phillipa Gregory's novels - That woman is an amazing historical novelist. However this was not one of them. In Vixen the prequel, it was alright, easy enough to ignore the historical inaccuracies, and the stereotypical star crossed lovers, however this book with four narratives rather then the previous three took too long to reach the climax. Their lives didn't intersect until the very end. Gloria and Jerome's love became increasingly annoying as they continued to have extremely bothersome lovers spats. Clara became this needy little girl rather then the strong woman she was in the previous novel. Lorraine lacked development. Vera was the only mildly interesting one. You skimmed over the whole book and only Vera's narratives would pop out at you.
4/10
