Gone by Michael Grant

After I read BZRK, it was only obvious that my next book should be a book from Grant's popular Gone series. I'd heard many rave reviews from friends so I decided to give the series a try. My initial impression was not a good one. I didn't like the pacing of the story (more on that later) and the simple writing style. However, the plot idea was very good and that persuaded me to finish the book.

Blurb: In the blink of an eye, everyone disappears. Gone. Except for the young. Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not a single adult. No teachers, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Gone, too, are the phones, internet, and television. There is no way to figure out what's happened. And no way to get help. Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents—unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers—that grow stronger by the day. It's a terrifying new world. The first in a breathtaking saga about teens battling each other and their darkest selves, GONE, is a page-turning thriller that will make you look at the world in a whole new way.

Despite the intriguing idea and the well paced action, I could not be distracted from the many problems this book had. The biggest one- pacing. I am aware that the series will eventually be comprised of six books. I'm hoping that there will be a lot more action in the 5 books to come. I mean, Grant left no cliffhanger. The bad guys left, people are hurt, the town celebrates Thanksgiving. Where are the unresolved conflicts, I mean yes the blob in the mine and also the FAYZ wall, but Sam, really? You're really going to let Caine go just so he can come back and kill you? Lame. I hate it when authors make their characters make unwise decisions just so there will be something to write about later on. Especially if the character is smart in the first place. Don't drag it out! I would rather have three well paced books than 6 that don't resolve all the main problems until the very end.

I would say 8/10. I still have hope for the series so make it good Grant! :) And a comment about your covers- they're useless. They don't tell me anything about the story.

  1. I'm addicted to these. They're so disturbing and intense that you can't stop reading even if you want to. And that "blob in the mine" is way more dangerous than you know. The books only get more disturbing, thrilling, and intense as you go along. I haven't read Fear yet but I can't WAIT to.
The concept is awesome too - Lord of the Flies meets X-Men :P

  4. ^^I understand Sam is trying to be a good person with morals and all, but this guy is trying to kill him and everyone he loves. I think it's time he got over it. All his problems (pretty much) center around Caine; if he can just get rid of him once and for all they can focus on the main issues. Like how the hell they are going to get the adults back. By the way, you two (angelaf and bendavis) did a bunch of Michael Grant reviews, prompting me to try out this series. I am now officially hooked. I absolutely love it :) Thanks!
