Word Nerd by Susin Nielsen is a novel about a dorky kid living in Vancouver B.C. with an overprtoective mother who befriends an ex-con over a shared love of scrabble. Spewing lie after lie Ambrose a 12 year old pro at scrabble goes against his mother's wishes and attends the West Side Scrabble Club with Cosmo their landlord's ex-con of a son.
I really enjoied this novel, though that may be a biased opinion due to my love of all things scrabble. It was really cool though, the characters were capable of achieving scores way higher then I could ever dream of achieving. Then there were the times when the characters went to places I knew in Vancouver, like Planet Lazer, Value Village, and Granville Island. I remember a bubble of elation as I smiled to myself thinking "I KNOW THAT PLACE! I'VE BEEN THERE! OH MY GOODNESS!" There was this one part where Ambrose was commenting in his mind about how Vancouverites liked to talk about the the weather alot, and I was thinking about it for a while and I realized, we really do comment on the weather, ALOT. I'd give this novel a 9/10.
Quick question.
