Though she tries returning to the life she knew before the accident, Pierce can't help but feel at once a part of this world, and apart from it. Yet she's never alone... because someone is always watching her. Escape from the realm of the dead is impossible when someone there wants you back. But now she's moved to a new town. Maybe at her new school, she can start fresh. Maybe she can stop feeling so afraid.
Only she can't. Because even here, he finds her. That's how desperately he wants her back. She knows he's no guardian angel, and his dark world isn't exactly heaven, yet she can't stay away... especially since he always appears when she least expects it, but exactly when she needs him most. But if she lets herself fall any further, she may just find herself back in the one place she most fears: the Underworld.
I'm a sucker for anything involving Mythology, so I was instantly drawn to this book from the day I got it. And Abandon is the re-imagined tale of Hades and Persephone, starring main character Pierce Oliviera. I thought it would be a light, fluffy, quick read, with cute characters and plenty of laughs - this is written by Meg Cabot after all, and she's the queen of chick-lit - but this was so much more than that! And the ending!! OH MY GOD! SOOO unexpected! Can't wait for Underworld (Book 2)!
I understand why some people didn't like this book. With its dark atmosphere, it's very different from everything Meg Cabot has written. In her books, we are usually introduced to a strong and likeable main heroine with typical girly problems who has always a sarcastic remark in hand and makes us laugh a lot. Pierce is definitely not one of them. You can tell from the very start that she's been through a lot, she is quite an outsider despite being beautiful. She's got realistic issues and emotions like every teenager does, and I found myself caring about her and hoping that she would be ok.
Overall, I great read. I loved it. 9/10 just because it was a little bit confusing. Nothing major though!
