Perfect by Ellen Hopkins |
Perfect by Ellen Hopkins is just a glimpse of what people go through to be "perfect". For four seniors, it's about reaching that goal of perfection no matter what they have to do to get there. Cara's parents have unrealistic expectations that has already sent her twin, Conner, toward suicide. Kendra wants the perfect face and body, no matter how much of herself she has to sacrifice. For big shot Sean, he will sacrifice more than he can ever win back to make it in the big league. And Andre realizes that to follow his dream, he'd be living a life that his ancestors would never have understood.
"Everyone wants to be perfect, but when perfection loses its meaning, how far will you go? What would you give up to be perfect?"
This is my third book of Hopkins that I have read and fallen in love with. I feel like there is a little bit of Cara, Kendra, Sean, and Andre in all of us, though we may not realize it. I really did like this book, but it felt like it was lacking something. I'm not sure what, but I needed more detail. I know Hopkins writes in poetry, but in Perfect, it felt like she left one too many details out for the reader. I ended up having to turn back in the book just to make sense of what was going on because Hopkins kept switching the POV with cliff hangers. In spite of all that though, I really did enjoy this book. I felt close to Kendra because I had the same issues myself. A real thought provoking book, and one that you should get around to reading sometime in the future. I'd give it a 7/10.
I love Ellen Hopkins books as well. :)
ReplyDeleteOut of all the characters, I remember 'connecting' to Cara and Andre the most.
I think out of all of her books "Identical" and "Burned" were my favorite. Less POVs like you said, making it easier to follow. But Perfect definitely has the nicest cover. :D
