The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern completely raises the bar for a fantastic novel, it wasn't even a fantastical novel, it was a masterpiece. Starting in about 1873 and ending in around 1903 the circus defies the rules of time by aging extremely slowly, and distance by raveling on an enchanted train that takes the company across oceans and vast distances. The circus goes up unannounced without a sound and opens only at night. Little do the patrons and the performers know that the circus is really just a stage for a challenge between two illusionists trying to outdo one another in skill and endurance. Celia and Marco are those illusionists but despite the challenge to the death they find themselves falling in love with each other.
I cannot say it enough, this novel is a must read, it was on the top picks at chapters for a reason, I finished it in a reading, it was brilliant. The whole novel was mysterious and romantic giving off a steam punk feel that made you desperately wish that there was such a circus, and if there was that you could run away to it see the magical clock that changes and the cauldron of fire that never extinguishes. I'm in withdrawl; this book was just too good. 100/10.
I saw this book at Indigo awhile back and loved the cover. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the description (in the mall) I was afraid the plot would turn towards the typical insta-love thing. :/
It wasn't too heavy on the romance, it mostly centered around the circus which was magical. Like it talks about the circus and the challenge, Celia doesn't even know who Marco is until halfway through the novel but the romance is still tangible.
