MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

A few of my friends have read this novel and watched the movie version of it before, so I decided to try it as well. This book is so well written that it really does seem like a retired geisha retelling her life to a translator! There were many personal and private details that made the characters extremely real. I feel like I understand a lot more about Japanese culture now, which is really interesting.

My favourite aspect of this novel is really just how it is written so skillfully that it seems like a biography. It also makes you think of how things are different from our Western culture versus the Eastern culture. Not to mention, the difference in the lives of citizens during World War 2  and now. Arthur Golden weaves history and fiction together tactifully and the result is very intriguing. The ending was not unexpected, but touching and nice too.

I liked reading this overall but would recommend this to older grades as it deals with mature subjects.
