Wish by Alexandra Bullen

If you could have anything, what would you wish for?

For broken-hearted Olivia Larsen, nothing can change the fact that her twin sister, Violet, is gone... until a mysterious, beautiful gown arrives on her doorstep. The dress doesn't just look magical; it is magical. It has the power to grant her one wish, and the only thing Olivia wants is her sister back.

With Violet again by her side, both girls get a second chance at life. And as the sisters soon discover, they have two more dresses-and two more wishes left. But magic can't solve everything, and Olivia is forced to confront her ghosts to learn how to laugh, love, and live again.

You've probably heard of the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover." Well, I often do. The thing is, a pretty cover often draws you to the content. You can't tell if a book is good just by looking at the amount of pages it has, so you look at the cover. Yes, it's a bad habit, but you never know what you might find. When I saw Wish at the library, its cover jumped out at me right away...so I read it. And it sucked.

There's nothing that jumps out at you throughout the story. A girl gets three wishes and messes two up before she's learned her lesson. Seriously, I thought I missed the climax...but it turns out, THIS BOOK DOESN'T HAVE ONE. To top it off, Olivia is drop-dead boring. She's whiny, naive and needs her sister to tell her what to do...ughhh. She didn't know how to voice her opinions, how to  stand up for herself, she's like one of those people (no offense, just an example) trying to get a discount at a cashier station. Holding up the entire line and causing trouble, wanting something that doesn't exist.

Okay, this book was cute. But that's it. I think that this novel would appeal more to younger teens. As a "pro reader" I found myself wanting more from the story and it's characters. Sorry Bullen, 5/10 D:

  1. LOOL I love the cover- it's amazing. I read Wish a couple months ago, and I completely agree with you. It was trying to follow what I would call the "Sarah Dessen genre", but it didn't appeal to me at all. The plot just wasn't strong enough to pull it off. Dissapointment :(
