THE NAMESAKE
Jhumpa Lahiri
This was an amazing book to read. It's a simple story of Gogol, a boy from an Indian family living in America. His cultural background, decisions and events in his life create an intimate, appealing novel. It was so well written that I easily believed I was watching Gogol's life unfold before me. The characters are detailed and unbelievably real. It not only chronicles Gogol's life, but also his parents'. This gives a perspective on the different generations and cultural gap. Misunderstandings arouse, which affects the characters' lives severely. At first I was skeptical of this novel but am so glad that I decided to go through with it. And now I am planning to read Interpreter of Maladies, another book by Lahiri.
